Kickstarting the Activities in May, HSC Holds Movie Screening and Discussion of Short Film “Overcomer”
HUMANIORA - (8/5/2024) Commencing the month of May 2024, the Humaniora Study Club (HSC) initiated its Language Day program with a Movie Screening and Discussion of the short film "Overcomer" by Hannah Grace. The event took place on Wednesday afternoon, May 8, 2024, in the lobby of the Faculty of Humanities on the 1st floor, mentored by English Literature lecturer, Agung Wiranata Kusuma, M.A.
One of the advisors of HSC, Mira Shartika, MA, stated that the movie screening and discussion agenda were carried out in an effort to enhance students' Listening Skills.

"Through watching this short film, students can practice their ability to listen to authentic English language, including variations in accents, intonations, and speech speed," she said.In addition to improving listening skills, Mira believes that this activity helps students enhance their vocabulary and expressions. According to her, short films can serve as a source of new vocabulary and expressions that are useful in daily communication.
"Participants can learn new words, phrases, and expressions used in relevant contexts," she added.Meanwhile, Agung Wiranata Kusuma observed that the sharing and discussion activities amidst the screening of the short film "Overcomer" served as an effective means to enhance understanding of the plot and storyline depicted in the film. He noted that students could actively engage in discussing various aspects of the film.
"This discussion provides a deeper understanding of the message and meaning (contained within) the film, as well as to broaden perspectives and build their analytical skills," he said.During the discussion, the students enthusiastically shared their views and interpretations of the plot, characters, themes, and messages conveyed in the film. They presented various opinions and diverse perspectives, thereby enriching their understanding of the art of filmmaking.
Meanwhile, the Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Galuh Nur Rohmah, M.Pd., supported the activity under the auspices of the Faculty of Humanities' Self Access Center (SAC). She assessed that the movie screening and discussion activity made a tangible contribution to fostering a culture of language learning, as well as forming study groups focused on literacy and language skills within the Faculty of Humanities environment."Movie screening and discussion sessions serve not only as a platform to understand the film itself but also as a means for the development of social and communication skills. These are all integral parts of learning that is centered on deep and collaborative understanding," she stated.
