HUMANIORA - (29/4/2024) A new article published by Quest Journals: Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Science Volume 12 ~ Issue 4 (2024) pp: 135-144 has revealed the important contribution of al-Jahidh to the development of linguistics, particularly in the study of meaning. The article proposes that the linguistic concepts developed by al-Jahidh integrate logic and rhetoric in sentence structure by incorporating words, styles, and meanings.
In the article titled "Al-Jahidh Rhetoric: A Critical Study Of Al-Jahidh's Linguistic Concepts And Its Contribution To Modern Linguistic Studies" written by Ahmad Kholil, M. Faisol, Moh Zawawi (all of whom are faculty members of the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang), and Akram Roshanfekr (a lecturer at Guilan University, Iran), it is emphasized that the method used by al-Jahidh in constructing sentences relies on rational reasoning. Initially, this research utilized sociolinguistic and pragmatic studies. The findings of the article highlight several important aspects, including al-Jahidh's intellectualism in the field of linguistics reflected by the integration of logic and rhetoric.
It is mentioned that according to al-Jahidh, there are several conditions to consider in understanding texts, including fluency in speech, cleverness in choosing words, expression of meaning, understanding of the science of balaghah, and rhetorical power. He also emphasizes that words with similar or synonymous meanings do not always refer to the same meaning, but can indicate different meanings.
Furthermore, according to the article, al-Jahidh is also known as a figure who introduced the fundamentals of Balaghah, with key concepts such as al-Ma'ani, al-Bayan, and al-Badi'. His influence is also evident in the classification of al-Bayan studies, which include lexical meaning, sign meaning, written meaning, conventional meaning, and pragmatic or situational meaning, which is later referred to as nusbah meaning.
This article provides profound insights into al-Jahidh's contribution to enriching our understanding of linguistics, and demonstrates the relevance and importance of his thoughts in the context of language and meaning.
