Gendered Power Relations Dynamics in the Film “Death on the Nile” (2022)
HUMANIORA - (5/6/2024) An article titled "Gendered Power Relations in the Death on the Nile Film (2022): A Critical Discourse Analysis," authored by Vayevienda Muhammad, a student from the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, has been successfully published in the accredited Sinta 3 journal Madah. The article discusses the representation and dynamics of gender-based power relations in the film "Death on the Nile" (2022) and is the result of collaboration between Vayevienda and his supervising lecturer, Dr. Mundi Rahayu, M. Hum.
This article explores the roles and social norms that influence gender relations among the characters portrayed in Kenneth Branagh's directed film. By applying Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the article reveals how gendered power relations are reflected in various aspects such as marital relationships, romantic relationships, and parent-child relationships.Through the analysis of the film "Death on the Nile" (2022), this research reveals that power relations can manifest in the form of marital relationships, romantic relationships, and parent-child relationships.
In marital relationships, the character Linnet Ridgeway is depicted to have significant power compared to her husband, Simon. However, Linnet's murder shows that her power cannot prevent her from becoming a victim of crime. In romantic relationships, the character Jacqueline expresses her feelings and dependency on her relationship with Simon, while in parent-child relationships, the character Madame Bouc has the power to intervene in her child's life. This analysis also reveals the complexity in the representation of gendered power relations in the film. Despite featuring strong female characters, the film still maintains existing stereotypes and social norms. With this understanding, it is important to continue advocating for more inclusive and diverse gender representations in media, particularly in films, to lay the foundation for comprehensive gender equality.
The publication of this article is evidence of academic achievement by students in the field of scholarly work. The collaboration between student Vayevienda and Dr. Mundi Rahayu, M. Hum., highlights the importance of guidance and support from lecturers in producing quality scholarly work.Their success in publishing this article in the Madah journal also reaffirms the commitment of the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang to provide quality education and support the development of academic potential among its students. This achievement also demonstrates the seriousness of students and lecturers in making real contributions to the academic world and shows that the campus is an environment that supports and facilitates research and scholarly publications.
