Humanities Lecturer from UIN Malang Becomes Speaker at Capacity Building Event in UIN Surabaya, Highlights Sexual Violence in Universities
HUMANIORA – (10/6/2024) Dr. Hj. Istiadah, M.A., a lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, was invited as a speaker at a Capacity Building event organized by the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. The event, held at GreenSA Inn Surabaya, aimed to enhance the capacity of the Task Force in preventing and handling sexual violence in universities.
With the theme "Enhancing the Capacity of the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Universities," Dr. Istiadah, who also serves as the Head of the Gender and Child Study Center (PSGA) at UIN Malang and the Chairperson of the PSGA PTKIN Association, discussed effective methods for preventing and handling sexual violence in State Islamic Higher Education Institutions.Dr. Istiadah began her presentation by highlighting a series of sexual violence cases that have occurred in Indonesian universities. She noted that the rate of sexual violence in Indonesia is quite high, with various impacts on the victims, both physically and psychologically.
One of the key points she addressed was the concept of the Rape Culture Pyramid, which explains that rape culture is rooted in jokes about bodies and gender expression, gender stereotypes, and extends to extreme actions like murder.Additionally, Dr. Istiadah discussed the concept of AOUM: Abstinence Only Until Marriage as stipulated in the 1996 Social Security Act. She explained that education that only emphasizes abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage is not sufficiently effective in preventing sexual violence.
In the same session, Dr. Istiadah suggested that the promotion of adolescent sexual and reproductive health should be based on scientific evidence, public health principles, and human rights. With this comprehensive approach, Dr. Istiadah hopes that universities can become safer and more supportive environments for all students. She emphasized that sexual and reproductive education based on scientific evidence, public health principles, and human rights is key to addressing the issue of sexual violence in academic settings.
