Humanities Lecturer Shares Experience on Poetry Reading at UIN Bandung

HUMANIORA - (5/6/024) A lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, Sri Muniroch, S.S., Hum., shared his experience of poetry reading with students from the Faculty of Adab and Humanities at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Sri Muniroch was invited to enliven the English Literature Department's Milad, in an event titled Gaudium Nova. The event was held in the Abdjan Soelaiman Building (4/6).
In the event, which was attended by the Dean and all academicians of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN Bandung, this lecturer from the Sasing Study Program provided material on poetry reading techniques and literary performances. In addition to delivering material, Sri Muniroch also practiced reading the poem "My grandmother washes her feet in the sink of the bathroom at Sears" by Mohja Kahf. The poem, which raises the theme of cultural and traditional differences, was performed with full appreciation, captivating the audience.
The poem by the American Muslim writer born in Damascus tells the story of the author's grandmother who is performing ablution and washing her feet in the sink of the bathroom of a luxury mall in America. This act sparked protests from some visitors who considered it not in accordance with hygiene standards. However, this conflict can be resolved by the author with a good explanation for both parties.
Furthermore, Sri Muniroch explained the criteria and tips for good poetry reading. These criteria include understanding the content of the poem, appropriate dramatization, reader involvement, voice and articulation, and accuracy. While the tips given include prioritizing meaning, following the sentence not the form, following the rhythm, and reading naturally.
This Gaudium Nova activity is expected to be able to improve the knowledge and ability of Sasing students in reading and understanding poetry. In addition, this event is also a forum to strengthen the relationship between students and lecturers, and to cultivate a love of literature. [al]
