I-YES 2024: “Indonesia Insight” Brings Culture and Tradition to Life Through Traditional Games
HUMANIORA – (September 11, 2024) The Faculty of Humanities, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, successfully held the second day of the International Youth Enhance Study (I-YES) 2024, themed “Indonesia Insight.” Led by Dr. Penny Respati Yurisa, M.Pd., the session was lively and spirited, involving enthusiastic participants from various countries who actively engaged in a series of traditional Indonesian cultural activities and games.

Earlier, in the first session (September 9), participants were introduced to Indonesia's diverse culture through an in-depth classroom discussion with Dr. Penny Respati Yurisa. The material covered topics such as traditional clothing, local languages, and the richness of Indonesia's traditional cuisine. Participants also experienced the emotional and cultural resonance of Indonesian folk songs, which added a powerful layer to their understanding. The session ignited participants’ curiosity about the unique local traditions scattered across the archipelago.During the second session (September 10), held in the garden in front of the Rectorate Building of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, participants enthusiastically took part in a series of traditional games. Both local and international participants eagerly participated in games like the balloon dance competition and the nail-in-the-bottle game. These activities tested their dexterity and concentration while fostering a spirit of healthy competition among the participants.
Dr. Penny Respati Yurisa explained that the second session was designed to provide participants with a direct cultural experience beyond formal academic frameworks. “We wanted to create a dynamic and interactive learning atmosphere, involving participants in both indoor and outdoor activities that are fun. Through these traditional games, they not only learn about Indonesian culture but also interact more closely with each other,” she said. One participant from India, Nidhi Priya, expressed her excitement after participating in the traditional games. “This is my first time trying games like this. It’s so much fun, and it has deepened my interest in understanding Indonesian culture. I plan to share this experience with my family and perhaps even teach these games in my country,” she said enthusiastically.
The “Indonesia Insight” event not only served as a platform for educating participants about Indonesian culture but also facilitated positive cultural exchange. Through their interactions during the traditional games, participants got to know one another better and shared experiences and stories from their home countries. This aligns with the goals of I-YES 2024, which aims to create an inclusive, interactive, and enjoyable learning environment while introducing participants to Indonesia's traditional values and cultural wealth. With these hands-on experiences, it is hoped that participants will take home not only new insights but also cherished stories and experiences to share with their families and communities in their home countries. “Indonesia Insight” exemplifies how to creatively and enjoyably introduce culture while strengthening bonds between nations through shared cultural experiences.
