
Invited by UIN Jakarta, Humanities Lecturer Presents Semiotica of Arabic Cartoons
HUMANIORA – (4/6/2024) The Faculty of Humanities at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang continues to demonstrate its commitment to spreading knowledge and strengthening collaboration between universities. One of its best lecturers, Dien Nur Chotimah, M.Pd., was invited to deliver a guest lecture at the Arabic Language and Literature Study Program (BSA) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta on Monday, June 3, 2024.
The guest lecture titled "Semiotics and Its Implementation in the Study of Arabic Cartoons" attracted many enthusiastic students from the BSA Study Program at UIN Jakarta. Dien Nur Chotimah provided enlightening material on how semiotics can be used to uncover the hidden meanings behind Arabic cartoons that are spread in digital media."Arabic cartoons are not just images; they contain deep messages about politics, social issues, and culture," explained Dien Nur Chotimah in her presentation.
Dien Nur Chotimah also explained that semiotics, the study of signs and meanings, is a powerful tool for analyzing Arabic cartoons. By understanding the symbols, metaphors, and ironies used in the cartoons, we can unveil the meanings that the cartoonists intend to convey.The students of the BSA Study Program at UIN Jakarta were enthusiastic about Dien Nur Chotimah's presentation. Many questions were raised to delve deeper into semiotics and Arabic cartoons, showing that the material presented was highly relevant and beneficial to them.
"This guest lecture has greatly broadened our understanding of how to analyze Arabic cartoons on social media, especially Instagram. We now understand better that behind those cartoon images, there are important messages that need to be understood," said one of the students.The Head of the Arabic Language and Literature Study Program at UIN Jakarta, Dr. Minatur Rokhim, M.A., in his remarks, expressed appreciation to the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang for their willingness to share knowledge through this guest lecture. He hoped that the collaboration between the two universities could continue to be enhanced in the future.
This guest lecture is a tangible proof of the commitment of the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang to develop knowledge and enrich the scientific treasures of Islam. By sending their best lecturers to share knowledge at various universities, the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang contributes to enlightening the nation and building a glorious Islamic civilization.
