New Approach: Final Defense at Humaniora Uses Article Route
HUMANIORA - (5/4/2024) A different atmosphere was evident in the meeting room on the first floor of the Humaniora Faculty at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang on Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2024. The faculty held the final examination for Humaniora Faculty students on behalf of Ula Robbithotul Rohmah. What was different this time was that Ula did not bring a thick stack of thesis papers, but rather the pages of her article that had been published in a nationally accredited journal. With the 70 points she earned from her published article, Ula only needed an additional 30 points from the examiners to achieve a perfect score.
In the session, the English Literature Study Program student presented her article titled "Gadgets and English Vocabulary Acquisition of Rural Preschool Children in Malang," which was published in the Journal of Linguistics and English Teaching Studies (LETS), accredited SINTA 4. The publication of this thesis-replacing journal marks the result of Ula's dedication with her final project supervisor, Dr. Rohmani Nur Indah.Ula's article is not the only one. Following Ula's success in publishing her article, Santi Agustin, a student under the supervision of the Head of English Literature Study Program, Ribut Wahyudi, Ph.D., successfully published her article titled "Indonesian University Students’ Practices and Perspectives on Translanguaging" in the JEFL Journal, indexed SINTA 2.
Furthermore, Munawwarah, a student under the guidance of Dr. Peny Respati Yurisa, managed to produce her journal work in Arabiyatuna: Journal of Arabic Language, indexed SINTA 2, with the title "Muslim Character Values in Cartoon Sulukiyyat Al-Muslim Al-Shaghir Based on Roland Barthes’ Semiotic Perspective."Not only that, under the guidance of Dr. Istiadah, Aditia Anwari, with the article titled "Exploring The Complex Narratives of Toxic Masculinity on The Instagram Account," successfully got published in the LIRE Journal of Bangka Belitung University, indexed SINTA 3.
Responding to the collaborative publication of student and faculty articles from the Humaniora Faculty, Dean of the Humaniora Faculty, Dr. M. Faisol, congratulated Ula and her peers on the publication of their articles. M. Faisol also expressed gratitude for the guidance and direction of the supervising lecturers until the students' articles could be published in nationally reputable journals."Congratulations to Ula, Munawwarah, and Aditia whose articles have been published in SINTA journals. Thanks to the supervising lecturers who have guided them well. Hopefully, this will inspire other students to be more productive," he said.
The decision to recognize journal articles as thesis substitutes demonstrates the progressive spirit of the Humaniora Faculty in embracing the MBKM policy set by the government. This step not only provides an attractive option for students but also encourages increased scholarly publication for both students and lecturers.Ula Robbithotul Rohmah's thesis defense session is not just about completing her studies but also about inspiring other students to pursue their academic dreams and be productive in producing scholarly works. With the support of the Humaniora Faculty, it is hoped that more students will be able to achieve success in producing quality scholarly works. [al]
